Who determines life and death?
Belief Systems, Random Thoughts, World Philosophy/Current Issues February 5th, 2008If a person is virtually a vegetable and can have no impact to society or any ones life, should they continue living? That is to say should their family continue allowing them to live and use the resources of the world. Is hanging onto their existence simply being afraid of death? Of losing a loved one?
If you feel that person should die - where do you draw the line? A person with severe mental disability? Someone who can only live for themselves and requires 24hr assistance with everything they do? Should they live? Are they wasting valuable resources too??
Then what about the person with no ambition who only enjoys hussling other people? Who has not worked a day in their lives.. Who simply lives their life leaching off those around them in one way or another.. Do they deserve to live? They are after all effectively doing the same thing as the mentally disabled person and the vegetable with the exception they are malicious..
It is clear to see here that using this argument in favour of killing off people for reasons of wastage of resources is a flawed argument.
The flip side to the argument is that people who are severely mentally handicapped or medically brain dead may not have the desire to live. The reason they exist is most likely for the purpose of their families/friends needs and wants. Is that really an ethically correct reason to keep a human being alive? Shouldn’t humans be alive independent choice? If that is the case - shouldn’t suicide be made legal? Some hypothesize that if suicide were to become legal then it would lead to masses taking their own life. The funny thing I find here is that you cannot be prosecuted once you take your own life, and this is the reason people turn to suicide. IF people were going to commit themselves to suicide they would have already done it or will do it regardless…
In my opinion, if a person is capable of individual thought and emotion, they should be allowed, encouraged and assisted to live their lives to the best of their ability. Far more resources go into the drug world, gambling, and marketing Coke; which is far less noble than keeping a person alive and living.
